Elders

Our Elders are........

Only Christ is King and Head of the Church! He is the corner stone, and the foundation of His Church is made up of the Apostles and Prophets of old (Ephesians 2:20). These offices are extraordinary and unrepeatable, but they are not all the government which Christ has established. In addition, through His inspired Apostles, He directed that the ordinary offices of Elder and Deacon should continue in the life of His Church (Philippians 1:1).

Elders come in two types: Teaching Elders and Ruling Elders. Teaching Elders are commonly called Ministers or Pastors, and they primarily provide for the preaching and teaching need within a local congregation (Ephesians 4:11). Ruling Elders are commonly called simply by the shorthand of Elders, and they shepherd the flock, caring for the congregation, and watching over her spiritual needs (Acts 20:28). Together the Teaching and Ruling Elders make up the Session, which is charged with oversight of the ministry of the Word and prayer in the church. In other words, the elders are called and qualified by God to care for the spiritual needs of the church. At Fairview the Session normally meets on the fourth Sunday of each month and additionally as needed.

All Elders must be selected by the congregation from those so gifted by Christ (Titus 1:5-9). The Teaching Elder (Pastor) of this Church was elected by the congregation in 2005 to serve an open-ended term on the Session. The Ruling Elders of this church are chosen from qualified members of the church, elected by the congregation, and ordained and installed by the Session. The Session elects its own Clerk and Committees.

Deacons

Our deacons are........

In addition to Elder, the other ordinary and perpetual office in the Church established by Christ through His Apostles is the office of Deacon. They too are elected by the congregation (Acts 6:1-6), just like the Elders. The role of Deacons in the church is to serve the congregation in its physical needs and to encourage the congregation to love and do good deeds for others in need. They relieve the burden of the Elders, so that they may dedicate themselves to the ministry of the Word and prayer, which would otherwise be compromised.

Deacons must be called by Christ to their task, which is recognized by the congregation by His gifting of them for their spiritual tasks among the household of faith (1 Timothy 3:8-13).

What is a Shepherd's Fold? Why do I need a "Deacon" anyway?

The Deacons are traditionally the "Caring Arm" of the church, ministering to, serving, caring for and encouraging others, both in the church and in the greater community. The role of the Deacon at Fairview Presbyterian Church includes being responsible for a group of individuals who are church members or friends of the church. Each group is called a Shepherd's Fold and is headed up by one Deacon. As your Deacon, and as part of the Shepherd's Fold program, we vow to maintain contact with you to make sure everything is going ok, to ascertain what the church can do to assist you in time of need, pray for you; also to make sure you are informed of things happening in our church and encouraged to get involved! We might be called upon to arrange transportation to doctors' appointments and to church functions. We might be called on to organize dinners in time of illness. We might just be called to be a listening ear or a friend in time of need. We are here for you! The Deacons at Fairview would like to encourage you to get to know us and your fellow Shepherd's Fold members better. Please carry the card with your Deacon's name on it with you and call us if we can be of help to you at any time.
